Synthesis

Initial Post (November 20th): To practice for your final paper, pick one of the theses (how desire leads to education or how education leads to desire), and list ONE reason, at least two pieces of evidence (quote or paraphrase) from different sources, and your analysis of how the two relate to your thesis.

Example:

Thesis: Desire leads to education

Reason: In an effort to succeed in school, often times students will sacrifice personal relationships for their education.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks separated herself from the seemingly frivilous desires of her white roommates at her first college and, instead, "lived in the world of books" (1).
Evidence 1.2: "I devoted myself entirely to my studies. I became bookish, puzzling to all my family. Ambition set me apart" (Rodriguez 17).
Analysis: Hooks and Rodriguez both distanced themselves from interpersonal bonds in favor of their book world, which helped focus their desire for education.

Reply to classmate (Due November 22nd): give your classmate a quote that might help them to further prove their Reason or to fulfill their analysis.

Example:

What about using, "[Stanford] was the place for me to go--a place where intellect was valued over foolish fun and games and dress up" (hooks 2) as one piece of evidence to support your final analysis?

DO NOT just tell your classmate s/he did a good job with his/her post.

  1. Thesis: Desire Leads to Education
Reason: Students who want and education often find it necessary to distance themselves from their past in order to succeed.
Evidence 1.1: “Slowly, I began to understand fully that there was no place in academe for folks from working-class backgrounds who did not wish to leave the past behind. That was the price of the ticket” (Hooks 5).
Evidence 1.2: “Those times I remembered the loss of my past with regret, I quickly reminded myself of all the things my teachers could give me. (They could make me an educated man)” (Rodriguez 20).
Analysis: Hooks and Rodriguez both realize that in order to stay focused on their academic goals they need to adopt a “don’t look back” approach.

    1. How about this quote from Rodriguez to help support your reason? " A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that I couldn't forget that schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student" (17).

  3. Thesis- Education Leads to Desire

Reason- It is only through what people learn about the world, and in turn themselves, that they can truly know what they want in life.

Evidence 1.1- Hooks learned after experiencing adversity first hand that what she truly wanted was not for the world to accept her, but for her to accept the reality involved in her desires, "Poor folks like myself, with no background to speak of, were invisible" (5)

Evidence 1.2- "I began to understand fully that there was no place in academe for folks from working-class backgrounds who did not wish to leave the past behind. That was the price of the ticket." (Hooks 5)

Evidence 1.3- Rodriguez learned that despite personal desires, within this world, you must choose between what you find comfortable and what you desire to have, "A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that I couldn't forget that schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student." (2)

Analysis- Both Hooks and Rodriguez learned first hand the tribulations involved in experiencing the transformation from one culture to another, and above all, learned the losses they have to accept in order to accomplish what they desire most.

Evidence 1.2: “Haunted by the knowledge that one chooses to become a student… He takes his first step toward academic success, away from his family.” (Rodriguez, 19)
Analysis: The more educated both Hooks and Rodriguez became, the greater the desire was to separate themselves from their families.
