For your initial response: determine the Audience, Purpose and Occasion for the following video, and then note whether or not Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech, and how he uses the elements you identify. Finally, say whether or not you think he was effective in his speech, and why (ex. how did he format his speech to help build his logos or ethos? How could he have better formatted his speech and why?).
In your reply: ask your classmate a question about his/her post regarding his/her thought-process regarding one or more of the determinations he/she makes (ex. "Do you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Awards or were they the people sitting at home?).
AUDIENCE: young aspiring kids, teens, adults too.
ReplyDeletePURPOSE: To inform the people that hard work does pays off, do not give up. Always be sexy (smart) lol
OCCASION: Teen Choice Awards
ETHOS: Successful actor, tv personality and businessman, spokesman for a well know camera company.
LOGOS: It's logical to say that his speech about hard work, opportunity, and being smart is appealing to the audience and listeners because he is a successful man.
PATHOS: he used words like smart, live life, get an education etc..which brings an inspiring and hopeful emotion
I thought Ashton was very successful in his speech, he started with a couple of jokes which entertained his audience, then he gave a good speech about opportunity, being smart, and living life, not the life people tell you. I thought this was a good format, being as though he is a comedian as well.
If Ashton wouldn't of used jokes in his speech, do you think he would still be successful?
DeleteYes I believe so. He had some good valid points.
DeleteAudience- Kids, teens, young adults, parents.
ReplyDeletePurpose- To try to influence and inspire his audience to be smart, hardworking people who build their lives.
Occasion-Teen Choice Awards
Ethos- The audience believes him to be credible and trustworthy through his fame and success as a model, actor, spokesman, and business man.
Pathos- Ashton gets the audience to respond emotionally by recognizing his success is in part due to his fans and revealing his real name. He also lets the audience identify with his point of view by sharing his experiences and the things he feels got him where he is today.
Logos- I believe he also uses logos in his speech by listing his life experiences as evidence and adding another successful person, Steve Jobs, to make it more effective.
I think Ashton’s speech was successful. I feel that by listing the three main topics and giving reasons for each and then summarizing them again in the closing, is very effective. I also feel that he really catered his speech to his audience well. Using the term “sexy” for smart, was strategic in gaining their attention.
AUDIENCE: Teenagers
ReplyDeleteOCCASION: CHOICE TEEN AWARDS
PURPOSE Express gratuity to his fans and advice audience that to be successful you need to work hard and be “sexy “. To create your own life and not to live in any ones else’s life.
ETHOS: His credibility as an actor, on T.V says it all. He is very well known and for that reason he is trusted.
PATHOS: He uses a lot of works in his speech that leads to a lot of emotions. Just listening to crowd says it all. Almost any word that comes out of his reflects on the audience. Example, His name , when he uses the word “ sexy “, the pauses in between his speeches, etc.
LOGOS: He uses logos by bringing up his past experiences he has lived growing up.
Its very logical what he is saying since he is tying to his own experiences.
His speech was awesome. His format was great. He made his point and made it by providing his past experiences of his life . Cannot think of anything that he might of done different.
I liked how you included in your purpose about his term "sexy" and what he said it represented. Do you think without that part of his speech his speech would have been just as effective?

ReplyDeleteAudience: Teens and young adults
ReplyDeleteOccasion: Teen Choice Awards
Purpose: To thank and inspire his fans to always strive to be hardworking and “sexy”
Ethos: Ashton is a well known TV and movie personality, him speaking is almost credibility enough; and the movie he was promoting within the speech was about his character creating, overcoming and for the most part being “sexy”.
Pathos: His inflection definitely inspires, if he were to read this monotone I’m sure the effect would be lost. Also his word choice is inspiring, fraud, hard work, sexy, etc. Revealing his humble start and his opportunities and saying that his name is Chris evokes emotion; its new information about someone you thought you knew.
Also when he says that the amazing people, who have done amazing things, are no smarter than you, you also have the capability to do amazing things
Logos: He appeals to kids by letting them know that he’s been there done that, (I was going to put this point under ethos first, because although it appeals to credibility I think it is more of a logical appeal considering the audience). When he says that sexy is being smart and generous etc. “opportunity looks a lot like hard work” then goes on to explain why, says his jobs and how he was never better than his job.
I think that it was a successful speech, it may have been less successful if he wouldn’t have included his past, or the bit about the “people who are no smarter than you”
I'm glad you mentioned the inflection in his delivery, I forgot to add that myself. Do you think his speech would have been as successful without the Logos if he would have still spoken with such passion?
ReplyDeleteThe occasion for the speech by Kutcher was his acceptance of the old guy award at Teen Choice Awards. I think Kutcher’s speech was geared toward his fans, preteens, teenagers, young adults and people that might be flipping through channels that stopped to listen to his speech about not losing hope in his/her dreams, whatever it maybe. When accepting the award, he give thanks to all his fans and then spoke words of inspiration that lead to his testimony about opportunity, being sexy, and living life were the secrets to life. Kutcher shows ethos because of his acting career and shows logos because of his age and life experiences. Pathos was shown in the speech more frequently than the others appeals because it was meant to fill his audience up with hope and motivation. I think his speech was effective for his audience because of who he is as an actor and the fact he states things the average, everyday person can do such as, work hard, be thoughtful etc.
ReplyDeleteI think Brittney summed the speech up nicely. She showed good example of ethos, pathos, and logs. I think she did a good job.
DeleteAudience-Teens, young people, young adults,
ReplyDeletePurpose- To take the oppertumity to talk to young people and give words of encouragement.
Occsion-Teen Choice Awards
Ethos-T.V. personality, spoaksman for known camera company, young actor that can relate to audience.
Logos-Because the audience can relate to him because he is a spoaksman for a camera company and a successful businessman.
Pathos- Astin uses his life experience to get his point across makes speech short and sweet.
I think that kutchner used a great format for the audience that he was speaking to. He said what he had to say. made his point that hard work pays off. Kutchner talks about oppertunity, being sexy, and building a life, Be real.
My fellow students, the video will not load for me at this time so I will post as soon as I get it to load. Ms. Taylor I apologize, this just has not been a good week for me.
ReplyDeleteAudience: Teens, kids, young adults
ReplyDeletePurpose: To encourage his audience to push towards their goals, don't let the world decide what you should be in life and how you should live. And to work hard for what you want
Occasion: Teen Choice Awards
Ethos: Popular well-known actor who's successful and respected
Logos: He uses his own past working experiences and how he worked up to being, now, very successful and well-known by starting off at just average jobs. He explains why the world cannot define you and uses his recent recent work on a movie with Steve Jobs.
Pathos: He speaks to his crowd about his life when he was an average teen, considering his audience is a majority of teens, he speaks powerfully and tells his audience what is real name is. He uses sexy as a word to define smart and generous not just about looks. He tells his audience in the beginning of his speech that if it wasn't for them he wouldn't be where he is today.
I think overall his speech was very effective he touches on logos and he obviously had creditability (ethos) but speaking to a young audience he really used pathos the most because speaking to young adults and teens logic, I believe, isn't as effective as pathos can be. Using his own teen experiences in his speech really helps encourage his audience that anyone can be anything they want no matter where they come from or what they do.
Audience: language style and usage was geared toward teenagers and young people in general (less than 25 years old); young audience at Teen Choice Awards
ReplyDeletePurpose: motivate, get kids to see things from a different point of view, giving advice
Occasion: he was winning the Ultimate Achievement Award (essentially the Lifetime Achievement award for the Teen's Choice Awards), which traditionally means the award receiver can try to pass on a tidbit of knowledge to the next generation
Ethos: He immediately addresses the fact that he’s winning the “old guy” award, gives him some credibility from his achievements which allows him the opportunity to give general life advice; talks about insider secrets in movie industry, he is honest about his original name and changing it for the industry
Pathos: he speaks like he really means what he says, he talks about working his first job with his dad (warm fuzzies); talks about sexiness, which i guess isn't really emotions, but the crowd goes wild
Logos: “world was built by people no smarter than you” definitely an appeal to logic; “opportunities look like work”, another way of looking at jobs, different perspective, appeal to reason; calls everything normally considered sexy “crap” in favor of intelligence and generosity
I believe he was fairly effective in reaching young people with his message of being different than what is thrown at them in the media. He spoke their language and he did it passionately. That being said, there was a total lack of transition from one topic to the next, which forced the subject matter. He could have also worked harder on connecting the idea that he changed his name for the movie industry, but he doesn't think that other's need to change to fit themselves to the world, which I think is what he was getting at.
Great job, I'm jealous I didn't put that in my logos :)
DeleteDo you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Awards or were they the people sitting at home?
This is the example question, but it's a good question I asked myself.
What's the difference between the audience at home and those there in person? There were probably more celebrities in the Awards audience, but there were many kids there too. Those at home would probably be about the same age as the young audience members. I think it was aimed at both, mostly for the young, but he also mentioned being in "the industry", and changing his name, which I'll bet many, if not most, celebrities can relate to. I'd say generally, he said something that all the audience could relate to in some way or another.
DeleteThe audience he's trying to target is mostly young adults and teens. I think his purpose was to get teens to think more about who they are to look at life in a less materialistic way. He used the Teen Choice Awards as his venue to try and reach young people. Ethos and Logos are extremely strong in his speech. He defies the typical media stream that our children see day to day by saying "opportunities are a lot like work," meaning you need to create your opportunities through hard work instead of it being handed to you. He then challenges the term sexy and redefines it into something of meaning (your character) versus appearance. Finally logos is brought in when he argues for people to not live the preconceived life and to make their own life. This was an effective speech. He used his popularity to point out things that kids tend to over look with their narrow view of how the real world works. Given the time he had for a speech and the short attention span of teens, I truly don't think he could have done a better speech.
ReplyDeleteGreat job I agree with you that people love his sex appeal and humor but do you think he would get the same reactions if he were not sexy or funny?
